5 Essential Elements for Short Video

The key to a successful short video strategy isn't just a viral hit — it's creating content that viewers can get lost in.

If you can craft videos that keep people watching one after the other, you've hit gold. After producing thousands of videos, we've distilled the top 5 elements of binge-worthy short video content that can turn casual viewers into loyal fans.

1. Great Audio

You could record in the middle of a hurricane with an old Motorola Razr, but if the audio is good, people will watch.

2. Faces

The algorithm loves faces — naturally, the better-looking, the better, but that's not an option for all of us. When I committed to posting videos, I thought about hitting the gym hard and going on a strict diet — and I did, for about four weeks. But pizza is really delicious so…

I just bought a good camera and lens. If I'm going to look average, it might as well be in high definition.

3. Cutaways

Even the most attractive faces don't hold attention for long. Use b-roll or alternate camera angles to keep the pace up.

4. Animation

Captions are a solid addition, but animations or illustrations can go even further in keeping eyeballs engaged.

5. Payoff

Of course, quality and value are key, but sometimes the most eloquent content won't perform as well as something random and punchy. Don't be afraid to experiment with different lengths and ideas — you never know what will pop.
