Controlled-environment nursery delivering disease-free seedlings as a service to commercial greenhouse and vertical farm operators.

What it is

Planteva Farms isn't a farm selling produce directly, it's a seedling and young-plant propagation business. It grows pest- and disease-free seedlings in controlled-environment facilities using automated systems and standardized protocols, then delivers uniform, ready-to-transplant young plants to greenhouses, indoor and vertical farms, and field growers. Founder Bryce Nagels left a coding career to apply proven propagation technology to a nursery segment he argues the industry has historically underinvested in, even though crop quality is largely determined at that stage. The company closed the first $2.75M of a $4.5M seed round led by Weber Family Farms and partnered with Swedish ag-tech supplier PlantVation AB to launch a "Seedling-as-a-Service" model in North America, installing two automated systems expected to produce 50M+ seedlings and transplants annually once operational in 2026. Based in Montreal, Quebec.

Who it's for

Commercial greenhouse operators, indoor and vertical farms, and field growers who need consistent, high-quality young plants rather than growing seedlings in-house.

Why it's better

  • "Seedling-as-a-Service" model outsources propagation rather than selling proprietary cultivation tech.
  • Partnership with PlantVation AB brings Swedish automated propagation hardware to North America.
  • Targeting 50M+ seedling and transplant annual capacity from just two installed systems.
  • Backed by an actual farming operator (Weber Family Farms) as lead investor, not just financial VC.
