Agentic Authorization Chain

Before an AI agent acts, a cryptographic chain must link user identity to agent identity to specific permissions over a bounded time window. Even after the agent terminates - even if it existed for seconds - that chain must be recoverable for audit. Agents are fireflies: they come and go, but the authorization record must outlive them.

How it works

  1. 1The chain structure: user authenticates (device + biometric) → user authorizes agent (device + posture + permissions + expiry) → both sides are cryptographically linked under a sealed attestation that is tamper-evident
  2. 2Provenance over lifetime: even when an agent terminates, the attestation record must be recoverable to answer: who authorized it, on what device, with what permissions, accessing what services, at what time - this is the audit trail that regulators, enterprise buyers, and incident responders will demand
  3. 3Scope minimization: agent permissions should be the minimum required for the task, time-bounded to the task duration, and explicitly enumerated - not inherited from a broad human identity or a long-lived API token
  4. 4The firefly problem: current agentic frameworks have no standard mechanism for linking agent actions back to a human authorization - agents spin up with API tokens stored in environment variables that are broad, long-lived, and shared, making attribution impossible after the fact
  5. 5The injection defense layer: separating the control plane (instructions) from the data plane (content being processed) architecturally - not just through prompt guardrails - is the structural fix for prompt injection; the context window mixing of instructions and data is the root vulnerability
  6. 6Enterprise adoption driver: enterprise buyers are already asking AI governance questions (who authorized this agent, what data did it access, what did it do) - founders who cannot answer these questions will be blocked from enterprise deals as AI governance requirements mature
